Eastward Ho!

Follow my adventures as I embark on a journey of a lifetime. I'll be overlanding from London to Darwin for six months, experiencing many countries and cultures along the way. From Australia, I'll continue east around the globe until I end up back at the beginning, just in time for Christmas dinner. That's the plan anyway, whether I stick to that plan is a different story...........

"Malaysia - Truly Asia"

'Malaysia - Truly Asia' is the slogan used by Malaysia for their travel advertisements, and they are right, it really is a mix of many Asian countries all rolled into one.  There are Indians, Sri Lankans and Chinese to name a few, and this is shown in array of food available.

Penang was our first destination in Malaysia, and somewhere that I visited on holiday as a child and had very fond memories of.  They were of a lovely beach resort, swimming pool and beautiful sandy beach.  This time I got to see a different Penang as we were based in Georgetown, and it was full of historical colonial buildings.  I didn't get to see much as spent most of the time at the local hospital with Aoife as she had her hand sliced open due to the coral that had got into her hand and infected it.

We tried the hawkers fair food which was raved about and it certainly was an eclectic selection of food that was on offer, and it was good street food, but not the best we'd had as we'd been spoilt over the months with great foods. Penang is where Aoife also had her hand opened up at the hospital to remove some coral that she'd got stuck in her hand from being in the sea in Thailand and her hand was seizing up with infection.  The doctor wanted to do a general anaesthetic on her!  We immediately said no, a local anaesthetic would do - no matter how much it would hurt!
Out for dinner in Penang

The overall consensus was that we should stay longer in Penang as there was more to discover, but we had a schedule to keep so it was back on the truck and we hit the road once again, this time across the other side of Malaysia to the
Perhentian Islands.  We left the truck and got into two speed boats that took us over to one of the islands, a fantastic ride, bouncing across the waves in an exhilarating journey,  until our little resort came into view.  An even smaller
boat had to come out to the speed boat to collect us, and soon we felt sand between our toes again.  What a lovely feeling!

The lovely feeling soon dissipated once we were shown to our less than lovely digs for the next four nights.  They were terrible, a room with beds and a toilet/cold shower over the toilet/sink coming away from the wall, and a terrifically bad stench coming from the drains in the loosely named "bathroom".  You felt dirtier coming of the shower than when you went in!

That night and first thing the next day, over half of the group de-camped and found better accommodation just up the beach, Zoe, Susan and Mandy and Keith and Sandra bagging beautiful beach side bungalows.  We ended up spending all our time their instead.

Apart from out digs, the Perhentians were amazing, warm seas, white sandy beaches, no roads, so no cars, and the most incredible wildlife.  You didn't have to look far as it was all around us.  Monkeys, flying squirrels, monitor lizards,
humongous bats, and of course the sea life.

A group of us went snorkeling for the morning and came across hundreds of colourful fish as well as a couple of sharks!  The highlight for me though, was swimming alongside the turtles, they were amazing.

After relaxing for a couple of days, it was Zoe's birthday, and the last of the Odyssey trip, so to mark this occasion, Zoe put together a great afternoons activity on the beach,'The Odyssey Olympics'.  We were put into three teams,
red, yellow and blue and an energetic afternoon followed, and a lot of fun was had, although I do believe some cheating was going on, and that is why my team, the yellow team got the bronze medal.  Anyway, moving swiftly on....

The peacefulness of the Perhentians was soon forgotten as we rocked up into Kuala Lumpa.  We were originally going to another national park, but not one of us could bear another couple of nights in the rain forest, where no doubt as
the name suggests it will rain and we will be in huts with cold water showers, so the idea of a nice hotel was preferable so we ended up in KL for an extra night and then an extra night in Malacca.

We did the obligatory hop on hop off, and visited the Petronas towers, and watched the base jumpers fling themselves off the sky tower which was near our hotel.  We also had a night on the town and headed to Hard Rock Cafe to sate
Mel's appetite for some Hard Rock action and she added to her collection a shot glass from them.  A local band came
rest of the night.

Another night out whilst in KL was Ben's comedy gig which we had been looking forward to for months. We were all nervous for him and turned up at Dirty Nelly's and took our seats for the evening entertainment, which was cracking.
Ben did himself and us proud and it was a top night.

Leaving Kuala Lumpa for our final journey on Calypso, we reminisced along the way to Malacca, and remembered all the highlights over the past six months.  Calypso had also done us proud and hadn't once broken down or misbehaved,
although a few leaks had started to appear over the last few journeys!  She definitely needs a rest!

Malacca was a lovely little city to explore, with less hustle and bustle that KL, and we went up the rotating observation tower to get the best views of the city.  We also went on an evening boat tour along the river, with the maddest tour guide ever! Mad as hatter.

We also ended our Gavin and Stacey gatherings here, we all used to gather in someones room, and over time we watched all three series, ending with the last one in Malacca.  I had never watched it before, and it was great watching a Welsh/Essex comedy programme with an American, Kiwi and an Aussie!  we have been saying things like 'Tidy' and 'Genuine' ever since!

On the last evening in Malacca, all of the Odyssey crew gathered by Calypso in our new T Shirts for a final photo session and to say goodbye to the old girl as we were to leave her there and head on to Singapore in minibuses.

It was rather sad, but what an amazing journey she has made over some extremely rough terrain, all the way from England!  Fantastic.

Bridge over the River Kwai has a whole new meaning to me now...........

Arriving in Thailand through the border from Cambodia, we were picked up in two very plush mini buses, and the first thing I noticed was that they drive on the correct side of the road over here - the correct side being the left side of the
road.  I also noticed that there were considerably less motorbikes on the road and more cars on the road instead.  The roads are also in great condition and it was a smooth ride to Bangkok.

We arrived in Bangkok and the guys immediately started preparing for their lads night out, it was the girl's night out the next day, so we dumped our bags and went out to investigate the Khao San Road which wasn't too far from where we were staying.

The weather was a bit dodgy as well and we kept getting rained on, not good when you haven't got a brolly.

The next day Aoife and I went to the local hairdressers to us and got our hair highlighted in preparation for our girl's night out, I can honestly say I have never had so much attentiveness at the hairdressers, and just like the hairdresser
I had in China, I walked in with curly hair and left with straight hair, and not because of any request from me!  So the girl finished of my hair do after 5 hours in the chair and only 10 minutes for me to get ready for the night out. All the girls gathered in the lobby and waited for our mini bus to take us across town to the Vertigo Bar at the Banyan Tree Hotel.  We all looked lovely in our new clothes, and arrived at the roof top bar and grabbed a cocktail from the
waiter and had our photos taken before we got too wind swept.  The views were incredible and after slowly sipping the expensive cocktails as there was no way we were buying another one!!  After a civilized start to the evening, it went
downhill fast as we headed to the Pat Pong district and had dinner at a restaurant nearby.  Afterwards the rain came down again and we were herded into a club called 'Super Pussy' and this is where we all got an education in how to use a ping pong balls and other objects in a different way from their original purpose.......needless to say we didn't around long as it was a pretty dodgy place and they were trying to rip us off left right and centre, and I nearly ended up in a fight with a lady boy.  We decided we would head back to our end of town and finish the night off with a few drinks down Khao San Road.

Whilst in Bangkok we also visited the floating market and the Palace, and all of a sudden it was time to leave, this time via the overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai.  That was an experience in itself with very camp guys and lady boys
attending to us and amusing us as they did so in their over-the-top manner.

We arrived in Chiang Mai and headed straight out to a bar as it was the start of the Rugby World Cup and as there is a varied amount of representatives from different countries amongst our group, there was bound to be a lot of banter
amongst us.

I will always remember Chiang Mai for the great day some of us spent with the elephants.  We travelled about an hour outside of Chiang Mai and firstly fed the elephants a whole heap of bananas, either placing them straight into their
mouths or them taking them by their trunks.  I nearly lost a hand as one tried to swallow it thinking it was a banana! After feeding them a mammoth amount of bananas and sugar cane, we learnt how to be Mahouts, and spent the next
couple of hours taking it in turns to sit on their necks and direct them by giving commands and tapping their ears.  After lunch we paired up and took it in turns to be either the 'driver' sitting on the elephants neck, or passenger sitting
on the back.  We then went on a trek through the jungle, then ended the day washing the elephants in the muddy pool, scrubbing them and generally getting very wet ourselves.  They certainly looked like they were enjoying themselves!

Ben, Aoife and I also had a night out to watch the Thai kickboxing, it was brilliant and looked like a lot of hard work!  Some of us also got to have a fun night out ten pin bowling, and I would just like to remind everyone that, yes, I was the winner!!

After such a magical experience like that, it was soon marred by the next drama which happened in Katchanaburi, which is where the bridge over the River Kwai is.  After visiting the bridge and the 'death railway', we went out for dinner and
past us, turned around and drove past me, and as they passed they grabbed my bag which was strapped across my
body, and before I knew it, they were gone.

I was absolutely raging and we all couldn't believe what had just happened, a passer-by stopped and called the police who arrived and took me to the police station, during which time a man came in with a purse he had found at the side
of the road - my purse no less, but with nothing in it apart from my driving license.

The very next day, Aoife my room mate had her bag snatched off her whilst she was cycling along, so we were both pissed off and could wait to leave the now re-named Snatchanaburi.

We headed for some rest and recuperation on Koh Phangan, and were all looking forward to spending 7 nights in one place without moving on.  It was our beach week where we could choose our own resort, some went to koh Samui, but the majority heading to Koh Phangan, and to the resort of Sandy Bay.  We all decided to get our own beach huts as they were so cheap, and by this stage everyone needed their own space for their own sanity!

We spent a great week chilling out in the sea or the pool, and we also did a Thai cooking course with the one and only Chef Tummy.  We learnt four different dishes, all of which I will be trying to re-enact when I get home.

After a leisurely week spent by the beach, we all met up again headed in the truck to Khao Sok National Park, staying in huts on stilts and endured a rainy two days with not much to do other than dodge the rain.  It was at this stage we couldn't face another national park that was planned for the next week, and the group came to a decision that we would spend extra time in Kuala Lumpa and Malacca instead.

As we headed away from the national park and from Thailand towards the border, we spotted a MacDonalds and descended upon it like a pack of wolves, tired, damp and looking forward to a new country.  I for one will not think of
Thailand without thinking of that horrible night and those thieving bastards!!  Malaysia here we come!!
